Happy New Year From Street Books

Happy new year! Hope that 2015 is shaping up to be shiny & bright for you so far. It was a wonderful year for Street Books, and we want to thank you for your continued support. KOIN 6 television did a nice holiday feature on our program, featuring the inimitable Ben Hodgson, who is now a board member. Check it out if you didn't already see it. The next few months, we'll be busy behind the scenes, sorting books and organizing our library. In February we will partner for our 3rd year with Sisters of the Road, to help celebrate their Validation Day (February 13th, from 11-2). Street Books will provide heart-shaped cookies and blank valentines (the latter made by earnest children, with lots of glitter), so that the diners at Sisters of the Road will be able to write some cards to one another if they like. This is also an opportunity for you to bring books to donate - we'll give them to diners, stock the shelves at Sisters and then keep the rest for our library.

Stay tuned for more updates in the coming months, as we prepare for our 5th (!) summer in operation. We are so grateful for the support we've received from all of you, and wish you well.

A.H. Says Thank You

Letter to Street Books: Hi there! I just read an article that the Facebook group, Hikers for the Homeless posted about you and your library. As a formerly homeless person, I want to say thank you for what you're doing and for your insight!

The town where I was while on the streets had a pretty big library system, complete with their own used bookstore. A few days a week, the bookstore would place a couple racks of books out for free and I was so grateful for it. Reading and getting engrossed in a good book gave me a brief and welcome mental break from the reality of life on the streets.

I'd always been an avid reader and I didn't realize how much I missed it until I picked up books from that library's free section. From time to time, another library patron would strike up a conversation about a book I had chosen or ask about an author. Those conversations were a gift- being able to discuss something other than the topic of just trying to survive...Thank you again!

Don't Miss the Street Books Reception: Wednesday, September 17

This summer's Street Books shifts have been friendly and busy, serving regulars and meeting new people each week who are grateful to check out a book. Save the date this fall to join us as we celebrate the street library's fourth summer in operation, and hold our first official fundraiser. We'll hear from local author Pete Rock, and longtime library patron Ben Hodgson. Street librarians will give their reports from the street, and we'll have a rousing game of Mystery Book. Light supper, drinks and dessert provided. Come join us! http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/781411
