Street Books: Happy November!

We had a most wonderful fall celebration, and want to thank everybody who attended. Tacos were eaten, books were magically divined, and many of our patrons were able to attend. We made our matching grant goal, (big thanks again to the generous donation from the Olive Bridge Fund), and we exceeded our fundraising targets.

Here's what's next: Our own Ben Hodgson & Laura Moulton will be participating in Lit Crawl: They'll talk about Street Books, and share the stage with author Patricia Kullberg, and her book, On the Ragged Edge of Medicine, a collection of narratives about doctoring among the dispossessed. The group will end by reading excerpts from novels or memoirs that offer various perspectives on living at the margins. Friday November 10, 2017 6:00pm - 6:45pm
CENTRL Office 1355 NW Everett St, Portland, OR 97209

Look for the Street Books library from 11-3 at Wordstock on Saturday, November 11. We'll set up near the museum, give out handsome buttons, and teach you the secret street librarian handshake.

Happy November!

Paul Susi Emcees the Street Books Event!

We here at Street Books headquarters are so excited to announce that Paul Susi, Portland's activist, artist, & performing wunderkind, will emcee our annual celebration this year, on Thursday, September 14, 6-7:30. Details and tickets here

Here's what Paul has to say about the Street Books project:

Streetbooks is exactly the kind of impossible, hopeful venture that restores my faith in humanity during these infuriating, superheated days. It's a bicycle-powered mobile library, serving people who live outside. Many of my Guests at the Shelters I've staffed in the last two years have been avid patrons. There have been news stories and lots of local recognition for this enterprise, all well-deserved. The annual Celebration event is meant to recognize all the hard work of the last year, and yes, raise some funds for the next year's operations, but perhaps most importantly, it's a chance for all of the different aspects of this community--patrons, staff, donors, civic leaders, community members, friends and family--to all mingle and meet one another in a joyful evening.

There will be a Divination Station, where you fill out a questionnaire on an antique typewriter and our mystic Oracles will choose the right book for you. You can also purchase surprise recommendations based on your taste and temperament. Collectivo de Son Jorocho will be playing live. Beer and wine will be served with the price of the ticket up to 2 drinks, with additional drinks available for purchase. Food by Por Que No?, so, really, why not? Tickets are just $25, with tokens for the Divination Station and the surprise recommendations available for purchase as well.  We're also striving to welcome all members of the community, so even if you can't physically attend, please consider purchasing a ticket or two for those of us who can't usually afford these kinds of things.

Light the Hearth: Celebrate an Evening of Art, Film,

Street Books is proud to join the Right 2 Survive Ambassadors program for a celebration of creativity by people who live outside. We'll be on hand with both bicycle libraries, giving out books and buttons. There will be art, poetry, music, film and a chance to make tiles for the new R2Dream location. Also in attendance: a poet & his typewriter! It's looking like it will be a gorgeous sunny day, and a full moon - come on out, friends!

Event runs from 4-10 p.m., Jamison Square (NW 10th & Johnson)

Street Books Celebrates With Sisters of the Road

The Street Books team is very glad to invite you to our annual Validation Day celebration with Sisters of the Road. We provide free books and blank valentines for diners, and also invite the community to bring their book donations in. If you've been meaning to unload a bag or two of paperbacks, now is your chance! Hope you can drop by. Tuesday, February 14, 11-2. 133 NW 6th Avenue.

Street Books On the Move

Some of the Street Books crew distributed books at 2 lunches yesterday. The first took place under the Hawthorne Bridge, and was sponsored by HOMEpdx. The second stop was at Potluck in the Park at 9th & Washington (where they set up in the underground parking garage because of the rain). Tony requested Ann Rice, and we found him a copy of Queen of the Damned. Abe stopped in and said "Any chance you have a Japanese language book?" and was shocked when street librarian Diana Rempe handed him a Concise Japanese Dictionary, complete with phrases and everything. As Street Books draws down the 5x-week bicycle shifts, we'll be offering winter book giveaways, and getting ready for our summer 2017 shifts. Keep a look out for word on our annual Sisters of the Road Validation Day celebration in February.

Reminder + Matching Grant Update

Very excited to see everybody tonight at the Street Books celebration - Don't forget that this year it's on NE Broadway (237 NE Broadway, between 2nd & third). We won't be on the rooftop terrace at Ecotrust! Also, you're welcome to pay at the door, if you haven't gotten a ticket yet (Brown Paper tickets stops selling on the day of the event). We've got some sweet auction items from Patagonia, the New American, and Lucky Lab Brewing Co. Can't wait to see you tonight!

Also, if you're not able to attend, but want to help us meet our $2,500 goal (so that the Olive Bridge Fund can match that amount), you can visit our Donate page.

Thanks to the community's incredible generosity, we are only $503 shy of making our goal! If you're able to kick in, please do, or help us spread the word. Thank you.

A Matching Grant, a Celebration

Thanks to donations from the Street Books community, we're nearing $1,000 toward our $2,500 goal, (Olive Bridge Fund will match that amount, if we can make it). If you haven't kicked in toward that effort, and would like to, visit: http://streetbooks.org/take-action/#about

Also, don't forget our annual celebration & fundraiser, Wednesday, September 14th. Beer, pizza and great entertainment will be had. See you there! http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2593089
