Spring For Street Books & Long Live Librarians!
Greetings from Street Books and happy spring! April marks a month-long celebration of the power of words, of reading, and of books: This week is National Library Week (April 7-13th) and we're taking a moment to celebrate all the librarians in the world: current, retired, on the street, in a brick & mortar. We're grateful for all of the work you do to help connect readers to the books they've been looking for. It's also National Poetry Month and the birthday of our local legend Beverly Cleary, (on April 12th, if you want to bake a cake). It's good to celebrate the transformative power of books, and it's at the front of our minds as we launch our Spring Campaign the last week of April.
All Voices Should Be Part of the Shared Story of Our City
Daryle Hall has been a volunteer since 2021, and a Street Books liaison for us, maintaining a selection of books for the residents at Schrunk Tower, where he lives. After street librarians pitched the idea of recording patrons to the City of Portland's archivists, Daryle agreed to be the first interview! This collaboration will ensure that the life stories of people who are houseless or at the margins will be entered into the public record. They are so often left out of a city's history, and this project will help preserves their vital stories. The recording sessions are hosted at the library shift at Trinity Cathedral. Spring for Street Books: Growing Support for a Community of Care
Kicking off April 23rd and running throughout the month of May, Street Books is asking our community to support our important work by signing up to become a monthly, sustaining donor! Monthly donations help Street Books enormously all year round. All new and increased gifts will be matched 1:1 up to $10,000 by generous donors! (Your $100 gift becomes $200, and so on!) Stay tuned for more information on how you can support our work this spring, and honor the big impact our librarians make on the street every day.
Thank you for all the ways you help and support Street Books and our community. We appreciate you!"
