"There Are Good People in Portland." —Library Patron Steven
Greetings,
On a recent library shift outside of Trinity Cathedral, the sun shone but it was bitterly cold. Library patrons chose books and reading glasses, and stocked up on socks, hand-warmers and Naloxone too. Because it was almost Valentine's Day, the street librarians also offered a treat.
"How about some chocolate," said Diana, our Community Outreach Director, to a passerby.
He stopped short. "You're the love of my life," he said, and gave Diana a hug. He left with a handful of chocolates and the interaction was captured in a recent feature by Steve Dunn at KATU news. Dunn told us that while past coverage has focused on the ways our city has struggled, it was refreshing to be able to boost the story of an organization that helps make a difference on the streets of Portland. Watch the feature and let us know what you think!
In 2024 we provided our patrons:
8,419 mostly donated books
1,008 pairs of reading glasses
3,548 doses of naloxone, and countless other life-saving supplies such as blankets, water, wound care, hygiene kits, and more

At Street Books we have always believed that books contain revolutions. At a time when political leadership aims cruel and punitive policies at poor and displaced people, Street Books is part of a community that pushes back at the notion that some people are worth more than others. We believe in the worth and dignity of each person and the right to housing, to good books and to a network of care. Street Books has managed to survive through 4 different presidencies but we've only seen an increase in the numbers of people living outside. Until the system changes, we'll continue to see disenfranchised and poor people be treated as disposable and pushed to the margins. See our Systemic Change statement.
We look forward to the work ahead and we're so glad you're with us.
